I figured I might as well start a build thread, I'll have questions for all of you from time to time. Starting with the ones below. This truck is a 1971 Fargo (Canadian Dodge), riding on a 1986 Caprice chassis.
Well I happened to have some free time today and weather was warm enough to do some work on the truck. I pulled all the springs and then messed around with setting the ride height for where I think it will be ok. In these pics I have it set at 5.25" near rear wheel well and 4.5" close to front wheel well, that should give me room for drop to lay it down and enough bag left for big speed bumps, maybe it should be a bit higher?
Next question is how much of the upper spring bucket can be safely trimmed away, hate to cut to much and weaken the frame?
The rubber I'm running is 29" tall in the rear and 26" in the front, Mickey Thompsons. After I mucked around with setting ride height I tore the front end apart, before the airbag setup gets installed I have a complete Energy Suspension bushing kit going in. Most of the factory bushing are horrible. I'm thinking I will weld plates to bottom a-arms to mount bags on instead of cups sitting in the buckets, then run cups on top and trim away what I need to on the frame. The rear will be easy enough, I've got mounts coming to weld to top of axles, then run cups into upper buckets on top of bags.
The bags I'm using are Slam Specialties RE-7s. I picked up a used Air Lift Easystreet to control them. I have a 5gallon tank and a Viair 380C for filling. This truck is just a cruiser, I'm not into the whole bouciing around etc. I just want to be able to lay it in the weeds while parked, look good at ride height and clear speed bumps when need be.
I'm welcome to any suggestions and ideas. This is my first bagged ride, so it's a learning curve. I'm a huge car guy, old school Mopar muscle is my thing, my other current toy is a pro-touring 1971 Dodge Demon.
